Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD) Description


The Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD) credential provides industry recognition for professional developers who build powerful applications using Microsoft Visual Studio® .NET and Web services. Responsibilities include implementing requirements,Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD) developing, testing, deploying and maintaining department-level applications components, Web or desktop clients, or back-end data services by using Microsoft tools and technologies.

Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD) Audience

The MCAD certification is appropriate for Programmers, Analysts, Software Engineers, Software Application Specialists and Application/Software Developers.

Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD) Prerequisites

The MCAD credential is appropriate for professionals who use Microsoft technologies to develop and maintain department-level applications, components, Web or desktop clients, or back-end data services, or work in teams developing enterprise applications. To earn the MCAD credential, candidates are expected to have one to two years of relevant work experience, or the equivalent in these functions.

Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD) Acquired Skills 

The MCAD certification allows developers to show they have the skills necessary to successfully implement functional specifications and build, deploy, and maintain Microsoft Windows® and Web applications. Demonstrate that you have the ability to successfully implement Microsoft business solutions for your organization or client.

Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD) Requirements

Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD) on Microsoft Windows® 2000 candidates are required to pass two core exams (one Web or Windows Application Development and one Web Services and Server Components) and one elective exam that provides proof of expertise with a specific Microsoft server product. NOTE: The exams required to earn the MCAD for Microsoft .NET credential are a direct subset of the exams required for the MCSD for Microsoft .NET credential. You will earn the MCAD on your way to earning the MCSD.

Getting Prepared 

To start getting prepared for the MCAD credential, Microsoft recommends that you gain experience with the Visual Studio .NET product and become familiar with developing applications and services in this environment. Microsoft recommends the following four steps:

  • Become familiar with the programming language(s) you want to use.
  • Learn to use the Microsoft .NET Framework.
  • Learn to develop Web or Windows applications that leverage the Microsoft .NET platform and utilize Web services.
  • Learn to create and publish Web services.
