Cisco adds extended solutions to Connected Grid portfolio

Cisco recently announced its Connected Grid portfolio will be expanded with the addition of more solutions and services that will allow electric utilities to better prepare, design and optimize phases of their plans to modernize their electricity grid.

One of the new offerings from Cisco is a field area network solution that it put together using Itron's smart grid solution onto the IPv6-based network.

"Cisco has developed solutions that will help utilities save costs and derive more value out of their existing technology networks as they transition to more robust and scalable standards-based networks," said Laura Ipsen, senior vice president of connected energy networks for Cisco.

IT professionals seeking careers with electric utilities could benefit by receiving Cisco training to properly deploy services offered by Cisco's Connected Grid portfolio.

Utilities using Cisco's Connected Grid portfolio can benefit from cost-savings, as well as a complete communications infrastructure management for utilities.

Grid security is also a main focus of Cisco's Connected Grid portfolio. With technologies such as smart meters, sensors and advanced communication networks, electric grid operators can effectively address security issues.
