IT jobs and salaries continue to grow

IT employment capped off a strong year by adding more than 15,000 jobs in December, putting the number of IT careers in the United States over 4 million, according to a monthly index of IT jobs put together by TechServe Alliance.

IT jobs grew 3.3 percent in 2011 over 2010, which is a 2 percentage point increase in the annual growth rate from 2009.

"As we begin 2012, I am heartened to see accelerating growth in IT employment," said Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. "Based upon both the data and anecdotal reports of my members companies, one of our greatest challenges going forward will be a shortage of IT talent in key skillsets."

An increase in IT jobs isn't the only good news for IT professionals. According to the 2012 IT Salary Report from Computer Economics, IT workers will receive a 2.8 percent pay raise in the new year. Findings of the study are based on a fourth-quarter survey of 130 U.S.-based IT organizations.
