Solid state storage increasing in popularity

A recent TechTarget survey found that 90 percent of organizations plan to utilize a type of solid state storage, while 25 percent of the more than 600 IT professionals polled are already experimenting with solid state storage solutions.

"Solid state storage is emerging as a viable alternative to traditional spinning storage disk arrays, and vendors are responding with new, creative and cost-effective applications that are rapidly changing the storage landscape," said Michael Kelly, vice president and group publisher of storage media for TechTarget.

The increased focus on solid state storage will require businesses to hire professionals who have the IT training and certifications necessary to handle the technology.

Solid state storage offers a number of benefits for businesses looking to adopt the latest technology. Solid state drives, or SSDs, provide users with improved performance, allowing data to be accessed and retrieved much faster than with normal spinning hard drives. In addition, because they don't spin, they have fewer mechanical issues, making them more reliable.

Many storage vendors are now offering solid state storage products, making it inevitable that the technology will pick up in the upcoming years. Business leaders will likely adopt these drives because it makes economic sense.
