IT experts call for more protection of information

Dennis Sever, vice president for information technology and facilities at Midland College in Texas, recently told business owners that protecting their information and data is becoming increasingly important, as more cyber attacks and external threats arise every day. IT experts are developing new technology to better safeguard data, which is pushing identity thieves to find new ways to hack into computer systems. Therefore, companies should hire professionals with IT training and education in computing and data security.

Sever said 7 percent of the U.S. population, or 9.9 million people, are victims of identity theft each year, with 24,000 cases reported in Texas alone in 2010, the Midland Reporter Telegram reported. Sever recommends businesses start their security efforts by protecting emails. There are threatening programs that are designed to search for certain data and information in computer systems, thus allowing attackers to collect passwords and other data. Companies should implement strategies to protect from attacks, and try to avoid sending confidential information via email or text message.

To better prepare female professionals to implement data security and other information technology tasks for companies, Turner Broadcasting Company is partnering with the National Center for Women and Information Technology to increase women's participation in IT training, coursework and employment throughout the industry.

"Increasing the participation of women expands Turner's ability to drive technology and media innovation to serve our richly diverse audiences," said Trish Jones, chief emerging technology officer at Turner.
