Government IT salaries below the national average

Government IT workers are receiving lower salaries compared to the national average, according to a recent survey conducted by Dice.

Because of this lack of spending, government agencies are not able to recruit the most talented IT professionals, giving these agencies less of competitive edge in the IT careers market.

"Defense spending is down from where it's been in previous years, but it's still enormous," Tom Silver, senior vice president of Dice, told Nextgov. "But there may be a perceived risk of working in a government position that perhaps wasn't there before."

The average salary for IT professionals in the the United States was $81,327 in the past year, while the average salary for government tech workers was $79,605.

Silver believes the government must focus on career development in its IT sector in order to grow the top IT talent, especially if they are not going to match the average national salary for IT professionals, reported Nextgov.

The website said many IT professionals employed by the government have a bright future with the use of their in demand skills.
