Increase in data collection may create demand for highly trained IT professionals

Research from Protiviti global consulting firm found many companies are taking steps to efficiently collect vast amounts of data, but need to improve on classifying and managing the data. Companies should offer IT training to equip employees with the skills necessary to manage unprecedented volumes of data in an increasingly digital workplace.

The study showed 23 percent of IT departments have minimal understanding of the difference between sensitive information and other data, while 26 percent believe senior management has excellent understanding of the differences. In addition, 69 percent of companies have a clear data classification policy to categorize data, and 50 percent have a specific plan to perform the categorization - illustrating the need for more data management integrated into business operations.

Microsoft has recognized the need for better data management and released its latest version of SQL Server 2012 to help companies collect, classify and manage data from any location.

The upgraded server addresses the challenges resulting from larger volumes of data used by companies. The server converts data into actionable business insights, while allowing users to access the information remotely.
