Companies want energy-efficient data centers, look to virtualized storage

Recent research conducted by CDW took a look at some of the best practices companies can use to make their data centers more energy efficient, with 65 percent of respondents using virtualized servers or storage.

The 2012 Energy Efficient IT Report, which is based on a survey of 760 IT professionals, said 62 percent of respondents believe cloud computing is an energy-efficient practice for managing data centers, showing the importance of having an IT professional on staff with the necessary computer training to deploy cloud services.

"Like any other aspect of IT, energy efficiency in the data center is a multi-layer stack of solutions working together, and all available solutions deserve consideration," said Norm Lillis, vice president of systems solutions at CDW. "The combination that makes the most sense will vary with the unique environment in a data center."

According to the Daily Journal of Commerce Oregon, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system will include guidelines that show businesses how to create more energy-efficient data centers, as well as how to lower their energy costs.
