IT job ratio moving towards pre-recession totals

IT jobs in some sectors were hit hard during the recession, with an increase in the employment of contractors and decrease in full-time job openings. That trend is starting to change with new full-time job openings on the horizon.

According to Tom Silver, senior vice president at IT employment services firm Dice.com, the ratio of full-time to contractor employment is beginning to shift to pre-recession levels.

According to Silver, the percentage of full-time IT jobs on Dice.com has risen to 60 percent, with 45 percent of openings for contractors. The five percent overlap consists of job posts that could fit either description.

Prior to the peak of the recession in 2009, 67 percent of IT positions were full-time with 42 percent for contractors. The shift back towards full-time jobs is a sign that the IT industry may be moving out of the recession.

In a blog post, Silver explained that some businesses are finding themselves in trouble, as they have spent too much time depending on contractors. He said contractors were often hired in an act of desperation, as organizations had laid off full-time employees before noticing that they needed workers for specific projects.

This short-sightedness has led to businesses feeling overwhelmed in IT and turning back to full-time hiring to create a sense of sustainability. As a result, companies are seeking professionals with adequate IT training to pursue a career.
