CIOs need more standards

For any CIO looking to move up in their IT career, Steve Rosenbush, deputy editor for the Wall Street Journal's CIO Report blog, said they need to have better standards for their own professional success.

"CIOs as a group suffer from 'insufficient professional standards,'" Rosenbush said. "That’s not good for CIOs, who like anyone in a position of authority, must command the respect of others in order to lead. CIOs must have a clear sense of how to manage disruption. Going forward, it may be possible for anyone in an organization to procure the technological tools of business, especially over the cloud. But when things go wrong - and they will, they will - it will be the CIO’s job to fix things and make them right."

Rosenbush said the Technology Business Management Council, a nonprofit group, is trying to develop the best practices for CIOs and benchmarks they can use to show what is needed for them to succeed.

A separate post on Wall Street Journal's website talks about what the TBMC wants to do and the group has said it wants to set up a benchmark for CIOs to compare themselves with others. If more is needed, CIOs can easily get great IT training to improve themselves and their business.
