Being a woman in IT can be great

WAtoday said women in IT have been a minority, but it doesn't necessarily need to stay that way. The Australian news source said some women in an IT career still really enjoy it and say it is great to be a "chick" in the industry. IT professional Carol Wapshere told the news source that she has enjoyed the flexibility the industry allows her to have.

"I've really benefited from the flexibility I've been able to have when I've needed it," Wapshere told the website. "I've been able to be that flexible because I've stayed technical...there are no roadblocks because people always need good technical resources, people who can get the job done with minimum fuss."

Other reasons it is good to be a woman in IT, according to the news source, include:
- Competitive salaries for those with IT training
- Many women have launched successful tech start ups
- The IT field currently has a wide range of career options, so women going into the industry may not face the same trials as they would in other careers

Liz Morgan, a talent strategist at Microsoft, told NWJobs that there is a small percentage of women in an IT career right now, and the situation is not changing as quickly as it should, as only 18 percent of women earned information sciences degrees as of 2009.
