IT pros looking to move up need to ask themselves some questions

When trying to move up in any IT career, people should know what they bring to the table and how they can capitalize on that. InformationWeek's John McGreavy said to move up to a CIO position or higher, people need to balance their IT knowledge and business acumen. IT training may help with the knowledge, while acumen is all about the ability to make good business decisions.

Another important part is staying tech savvy, McGreavy said. Professionals need to show their knowledge in programs like Jive, Java, and more.

"Have you worked through a data security breach or an e-discovery process?{attribution here} Are cloud services truly sent from heaven? CIOs must be current with technologies as they impact the enterprise. Showing everyone the Star Walk app on your iPad won't cut it."

He said there are some things to do before trying to move up in the world, including spending time with the IT department to better understand others, taking time to develop skills and finding a special project that could help show value for current or future employers.

Some other things people trying to move up in an IT career need to keep in mind, according to TechRepublic, are that they need to develop a message, be consistent and treat the top talent as if they are the boss.
