Microsoft to launch mobile apps for Lync

Microsoft will launch the first mobile apps for the company's Lync communications service compatible with Android, Windows Phone, iPhone and iPad devices. Users will be able to access Lync business communication tools from their mobile devices, including instant messaging, email and conference calling. Further, companies will be able to offer IT training for the tools on computers and mobile devices.

Geek Wire reported Lync is part of the Microsoft Office 365 suite, and is in direct competition with Google business Apps. According to the Lync website, Microsoft-developed Lync clients will be accessible on Windows Phone 7 and iPhone, jointly developed clients will be available for Nokia phones and partner-developed clients will be accessible for other smartphone platforms.

Microsoft is expected to unveil the new apps the same time it reveals the first major service update to Office 365, which also includes new features and 22 new markets, the source reported.

PC World reported that part of the Office 365 update are new tools that will help make the deployment and migration to the suite simpler and automated. Microsoft has developed Office 365 as a step up from the Business Productivity Online Suite, and it is considered a direct competitor to Google Apps.
